If at all possible, keep pets indoors during the winter months with a draft free sleeping area. If they cannot be accommodated indoors, your pets must be provided with adequate outdoor shelter and commodities as follows:

1. Insulated or heated
2. Elevated off the ground
3. Heated water sources
4. Extra feeding as required

Small animals such as cats and the occasional squirrel sometimes seek refuge under the hood of a warm car. Be sure to check under the hood before starting your vehicle and/or honk the horn to startle any animals seeking shelter inside.

Prolonged exposure to snow and salt can be harmful to exposed skin surfaces and should be removed from your pets paws and body immediately.

Festive plants, decorations and other items associated with winter and holiday season may be toxic to your pets. The following is a short list of some common items. Please consult your veterinarian and or animal poison control for an extended list.

1. Poinsettia
2. Balsam/pine/cedar/fir
3. Fireplace colors/salts
4. Alcoholic beverages; and chocolate
5. Mistletoe (especially berries)
6. Antifreeze

Refrain from giving your pet treats such as fatty food scraps, bones, alcoholic beverages, and chocolate, as these are harmful and toxic to animals. Do not allow friends or relatives to give your pet 'special treats' as well.

If you plan to leave, make early arrangements to board your pet or hire a pet sitter as this is a busy time of year and spaces may be limited.

The holidays and winter season are a busy time for all of us, but through attentiveness and preparation, it can be a enjoyable time for everyone including our 'phuzzy' friends.
